A shocking incident occurred at a famous tourist site in Greece when a man used a knife to attack two tourists near the Acropolis in Athens before police apprehended the suspect.
The AP news agency reported that the incident happened Tuesday morning (21 Jul) local time, near the entrance to the Acropolis Museum, located at the base of the Acropolis hill, one of Greece’s most important archaeological sites and tourist attractions.
Police revealed that the attacker used a knife to assault a man and a woman, both American tourists of Greek descent. The woman sustained minor leg injuries while the man was seriously wounded in his arm before officers quickly arrested the perpetrator.
Both injured individuals were taken to hospital by ambulance, while police are investigating the motive. Initial reports indicate the suspect may have mental health issues, but no further details or identity have been disclosed.
Greece generally has a low rate of violent crime, and attacks of this nature in public are uncommon. In April, Greek police arrested an 89-year-old man accused of firing a shotgun inside a social security office and a courthouse in Athens, injuring at least four people, reportedly due to grievances with the social security system.
The Acropolis is a key symbol of Greece and home to the nearly 2,500-year-old Parthenon temple. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a globally famous tourist destination, attracting 4.6 million visitors last year.
This incident alarmed tourists in the area, although authorities confirmed they quickly contained the situation and there have been no further reports of injuries.
