The U.S. Secretary of Energy and Saudi Arabia have signed a peaceful nuclear energy cooperation agreement, affirming the highest standards of safety and nuclear non-proliferation.

On Wednesday, 22 July 2026, the U.S. Department of Energy announced that Chris Wright, U.S. Secretary of Energy, and Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, Saudi Arabia's Energy Minister, signed a peaceful nuclear cooperation agreement along with a related bilateral safeguards agreement.

The Department stated that the agreement signed with Saudi Arabia establishes a “legal foundation” for a “long-term partnership worth tens of billions of dollars.”

Additionally, the Department revealed that the “peaceful nuclear cooperation agreement” will greatly facilitate American companies’ access to Saudi Arabia's nuclear energy projects.

The Department emphasized that the agreement comprises two contracts: the “peaceful nuclear cooperation agreement” and the “bilateral safeguards agreement,” which will help “strengthen global nuclear non-proliferation standards.”

“The agreement is currently being sent to Congress for review and consideration,” the U.S. Department of Energy added.

Chris Wright stated that the two agreements signed with Saudi Arabia uphold the “highest standards of nuclear safety and nuclear non-proliferation.”

“These agreements reflect the shared commitment of both nations to strengthen trade relations between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia, bringing domestic prosperity and security to our allies abroad,” Wright said in a statement released by the Department of Energy.

“Rest assured, these agreements adhere to the highest standards of nuclear safety and non-proliferation, relying on the best nuclear technology and scientists in the world, designed right here in the United States.”

“Thanks to President Trump, a renaissance era of American nuclear power has begun.”
