A fire broke out in a house in the capital of Peru, killing 10 members of the same family and injuring 2 others, amid reports that the incident may have been arson.
On Wednesday, 22 Jul 2026, Lieutenant General Oscar Arriola from the National Police of Peru revealed that a fire occurred at a residence in the La Victoria district of Lima, the capital of Peru, resulting in 10 deaths among members of the same family, including five children.
The deceased included five children aged 3, 6 (two children), 8, and 15 years old, and four adults aged 29, 35, 42, and 72 years. The age of the tenth victim remains unknown. Additionally, two others were reported injured.
Police are urgently investigating reports that the fire was caused by arson. Local media reported that the family, who run a mattress manufacturing business and own an electric motorcycle, had previously received threats and extortion demands.
According to the government news agency Andina, neighbors saw a suspicious individual set fire to a motorcycle parked outside the house before the flames quickly spread to the highly flammable mattress materials inside.
The news website Infobae reported that at the time of the fire, at 03:00 local time on Wednesday, 22 Jul, there were 17 family members inside the building, of whom seven managed to escape.
"Today, the entire Peruvian nation is plunged into silence facing a tragedy that has brought sorrow to our country," stated a release from the National Police of Peru.
