Singapore confirms that the former minister resigned over sending inappropriate messages to a woman and was given a fair opportunity to explain himself.
On 22 July 2026, foreign news agencies reported that K. Shanmugam, Singapore's Minister for Home Affairs, addressed the case of former minister Faisal Ibrahim, responsible for Muslim affairs, who resigned on 20 July. He stated that the messages Faisal sent online to a woman were inappropriate and questionable, even though Faisal did not intend to establish a romantic relationship.
Shanmugam said on Facebook that the case was reviewed fairly and based on facts and evidence, not just the intentions of those involved. He noted that Faisal later admitted he should not have allowed the conversation to continue and should have set clear boundaries from the start.
Earlier, in his resignation letter to Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Faisal affirmed that he never had a physical relationship with the woman and never intended the relationship to develop that way. However, after a complaint was filed with the government leader, the issue was no longer a private matter but one involving a public official, necessitating the Prime Minister's Office to assess the appropriateness of the conduct.
He also stressed that Faisal was given a fair chance to explain, and ultimately decided he could no longer serve as a Member of Parliament and minister, thus submitting his resignation, which the Prime Minister accepted.
Shanmugam further cited protocol that if inappropriate behavior remains private and ends after a warning, it can be handled internally. But if complaints arise or the matter becomes public, relevant authorities must investigate and take appropriate action if misconduct is found.
