Donald Trump confirmed he will approve a nuclear deal with Saudi Arabia, but Riyadh must join the Abraham Accords to recognize the State of Israel and establish diplomatic relations.
On Thursday, 23 Jul 2026 GMT+7, U.S. President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that approval of the significant nuclear agreement between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia, signed on Wednesday, depends on whether the Riyadh government joins the Abraham Accords to recognize the establishment of the State of Israel.
“The nuclear agreement is for civilian purposes only (no uranium enrichment!)... to be used exclusively for non-military applications... will be approved, but only if Saudi Arabia joins the widely accepted and highly successful Abraham Accords,” Trump’s post stated.
Trump’s post came after experts criticized that the deal might risk nuclear proliferation in the already unstable Middle East region.
It remains unclear how Saudi Arabia will respond, but previously they stated they would not recognize Israel until a Palestinian state is established.
So far, it has not been revealed whether the condition to join the Abraham Accords is included in the draft nuclear agreement, whether Saudi Arabia has accepted this condition, or if it is being pressured to join the Accords.
In 2020, Trump brokered the Abraham Accords to encourage Arab nations to recognize Israel and establish diplomatic ties. Initially, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain joined, followed later by Sudan, Morocco, and Kazakhstan.
Israel expressed congratulations on Trump’s statement. The Prime Minister’s Office, led by Benjamin Netanyahu, posted on X that Saudi Arabia joining the Abraham Accords “would be a historic milestone toward peace in the Middle East.”
The statement did not mention the nuclear deal. However, Israel’s Minister of Commerce, Nir Barkat, previously said that Israel could “accept” Saudi Arabia having nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
It is widely believed that Israel possesses nuclear weapons, although the Israeli government has never officially confirmed or denied this.
