ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR) have called on the current ASEAN Chair to provide proof that "Aung San Suu Kyi" is still alive and to allow her family, lawyers, and medical team to visit her.
On 24 July 2026, the Irrawaddy news agency reported that the ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR) urged Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the President of the Philippines and the current ASEAN Chair, to urgently seek verification that Aung San Suu Kyi, the former Myanmar government leader detained by the military junta, is still alive.
APHR's statement said that confirming Aung San Suu Kyi's status should be a "concrete test" of whether ASEAN can resume relations with Myanmar's military government and must be an uncompromisable condition before any further diplomatic engagement with the junta.

APHR also called on the ASEAN Chair to pressure Myanmar's military government to allow Aung San Suu Kyi’s family, lawyers, and an independent medical team to have direct access to her.
Additionally, the letter was sent to José Ramos-Horta, the President of Timor-Leste, whose government has filed legal proceedings against Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, the leader of Myanmar's military government. APHR urged both leaders to push for the unconditional release of all political prisoners in Myanmar, including Aung San Suu Kyi.
Aung San Suu Kyi, aged 81, has been detained since Myanmar's military seized power in 2021. Reports indicate she is in poor health. Under pressure from China, it was reported that in April she was moved from prison to a military-controlled residence and had her prison term reduced to about 13 years. However, she remains in undisclosed detention, with no contact with the outside world, prompting the international community to demand that the military government provide proof that she is still alive.
