U.S. President Donald Trump became a hot topic after delivering a speech at the White House Correspondents' Association (WHCA) dinner on Friday night (24 Jul). He intended to tease and mock the press at the event but was criticized for "flat," "unfunny," and "boring" jokes, sparking discussion in the media and online.
Although the event traditionally features humorous exchanges between U.S. leaders and journalists, many viewed Trump’s speech differently because it lasted nearly an hour and was filled more with attacks on the media and political rivals than with humor.
One viral line was, "This might be the place where the most people with 'Trump Derangement Syndrome' have ever gathered." The term Trump Derangement Syndrome is used by Trump supporters to describe those who vehemently oppose or criticize him, suggesting they are obsessively hateful to the point of losing rational judgment.
Trump also joked, "Sometimes I really think some of you don't like me," and teased, "When I quit politics, you all will be broke," while labeling some media outlets as "Fake News."
Despite Trump's attempt at humor, many American media outlets and attendees saw the performance as lacking moments that elicited laughter. Several parts of the event were quieter than expected, and afterward, journalists, hosts, and internet users widely criticized it as one of the most awkward speeches in WHCA history.
CNN analyzed that more interesting than the jokes was the media’s ability to openly criticize the president through television and social media, reflecting the U.S. principle of freedom of expression.
However, Trump also praised the Secret Service officers who stopped a gunman in an incident in April and condemned political violence.
He then returned to joking by teasing guests for not wearing bulletproof vests, saying many prefer to risk death rather than gain 20 pounds in weight—another comment criticized as inappropriate since the event took place just three months after a shooting attempt at the same gathering.
