Two passenger buses collided on a major highway in eastern Syria, resulting in 35 deaths and dozens more injured amid road deterioration caused by a decade-long civil war war.
On Saturday, 25 Jul 2026 GMT+7, the Syrian state news agency SANA reported a collision between two passenger buses on the Damascus–Deir Ezzor highway crossing the desert in the country's east-central region, causing at least 35 deaths and 30 injuries.
The Ministry of Interior stated the accident involved a bus carrying domestic security personnel and a public passenger bus, without specifying how many fatalities were from each vehicle.
Government television broadcast footage showing one bus ablaze and debris scattered across the highway, while authorities dispatched military helicopters to urgently evacuate the injured from the scene.
Raed Al Saleh, Minister of Emergency Management and Disaster Affairs, said this was among the deadliest road accidents in Syria in recent years and described it as a "shared national responsibility for all of us to work together to prevent such tragic events from recurring."
Al Saleh added the incident underscored the urgent need to repair Syria’s road infrastructure, which he said has suffered years of neglect and damage from the war.
The protracted civil war has left most of Syria’s road network in poor condition. State media quoted Moaz Najjar, Director of Land Transport in Damascus, as ordering road repairs in the eastern region to be treated as a top priority.
