The US Ambassador to the United Nations claimed that Donald Trump is creating space for negotiations with Iran after the US military delayed attacks on Iran this weekend following 13 consecutive nights of bombardment.
On Sunday, 26 July 2026 GMT+7, Mike Waltz, US Ambassador to the United Nations, said in an interview on NBC's “Meet the Press” that President Donald Trump is providing an opportunity for talks with Iran to advance after the US military showed signs of postponing attacks on Iran this weekend.
"What the president is doing now, as we have seen consistently, is opening space for negotiations. Talks are ongoing and taking place at every level, from technical aspects to the highest levels," Waltz said.
In a separate interview on “Fox News Sunday,” Waltz said diplomatic efforts have intensified, "especially in the past few days."
However, in the NBC interview, Waltz reiterated Trump's warning that the US military is "ready to strike at any time" while these negotiations continue, and said the president "remains open to all options."
The US Ambassador also claimed that internal conflicts within the Iranian government have made negotiations difficult.
Waltz's remarks came as reports said General Dan Kene, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, raised concerns about the US stockpiles of ammunition and explosives along with other negative impacts during a White House meeting last Friday, where Trump and senior officials discussed the possibility of escalating attacks on Iran.
Waltz seemed to acknowledge to NBC that "many weapons stockpiles have been depleted," blaming US support for Ukraine and saying this depletion is a legacy inherited from the previous administration.
When pressed by host Kristen Welker on whether he accepted that US weapons stockpiles are running low, Waltz emphasized that the US military "has everything necessary to conduct this operation as effectively as required."
