German police have fatally shot the main suspect involved in the vehicle attack on the Pride Parade last Saturday night, stating the suspect tried to attack officers with a knife.
On Sunday, 27 July 2026, German police revealed that officers fatally shot Abdul Ballout, the main suspect in the vehicle attack on the LGBTQ+ Pride Parade in Berlin on Saturday night.
Authorities reported that the suspect was located in a residential area in the Spandau district in western Berlin at 18:00 local time on Sunday.
In a progress briefing, police stated they believe the suspect "charged at our rescue officers with a sharp weapon, prompting Berlin’s Special Operations Command (SEK) to respond with gunfire."
"Despite immediate resuscitation efforts by Berlin firefighters, the suspect died at the scene," a police spokesperson said. "We had to stop him; we did so by shooting, and he died as a result."
In response to further questions from reporters, officials added that only one suspect was found at the Spandau location and that "there is currently no ongoing search for other suspects." The case has now been handed over to Germany’s homicide investigation office.
The vehicle attack occurred just before 22:00 local time on Saturday. A white van rammed into people near the southern edge of Tiergarten park in Berlin before crashing into a tree. One or more suspects then exited the vehicle, with the main suspect wielding a machete to attack additional people.
The scene was just a few hundred meters from the parade’s endpoint and the main stage near Brandenburg Gate. After the incident, authorities ordered the event to end immediately and began evacuating attendees.
The main suspect, Abdul Ballout, 21, is a German citizen of Lebanese descent known to support the Islamic State (ISIS). He has a criminal record, including a suspended sentence from May for preparing violent acts after attempting to join ISIS in the Middle East.
