Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, issued a strong statement attacking ASEAN, describing its call for a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula as "foolish and unreasonable.",
Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, stated in a release through the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) that she was deeply displeased with ASEAN's stance after ASEAN expressed serious concern over North Korea's advancing nuclear weapons program and emphasized the importance of negotiations to achieve lasting peace and stability on a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula during last week's ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting and related sessions.
She viewed ASEAN's position as an open display of hostility, aligning itself with the United States, which continues to push nuclear disarmament rhetoric while ignoring the fact that North Korea's nuclear state status has already been constitutionally recognized.
She further said that demands for North Korea to abandon its nuclear program are inconsistent with reality and reflect a refusal to accept changes in the country's policy and status, criticizing such ideas as "foolish and unreasonable."
North Korea has consistently asserted its right to possess nuclear weapons and missile programs, despite violating United Nations Security Council sanctions. Pyongyang enshrined its status as a nuclear state in its constitution in 2023 and has repeatedly emphasized it will never abandon its nuclear arsenal, stating it is a crucial measure to protect sovereignty and counter security threats from the United States and its allies.
