The United Kingdom's Gatwick Airport experienced a water supply disruption on Sunday, resulting in some restrooms becoming unusable and several restaurants temporarily closing, causing considerable inconvenience to many passengers.
Gatwick Airport, the UK's second busiest by passenger volume, faced a water supply failure on Sunday during the busy summer travel season when passenger numbers are high.
The disruption affected both terminal buildings at the airport, located south of London, which serves as a hub for several low-cost airlines, including EasyJet.
Although flights were not affected, many passengers posted on social media that they could not flush toilets, wash their hands, access drinking water, or buy hot drinks inside the airport.
Gatwick Airport posted on the platform X: "A water supply issue in the Horley area affected airport services this morning, impacting water systems in both the North and South terminals. Investigations into the cause are ongoing."
The airport also stated it distributed bottled water to passengers and staff and implemented other emergency measures to ensure passengers' welfare and safety while awaiting resolution.
SES Water, the local water provider, revealed that the problem stemmed from a power outage at a nearby water treatment facility, causing disruptions in water supply, with some customers experiencing low water pressure or intermittent flow temporarily.
The company said it is working closely with Gatwick Airport to expedite repairs and restore the water supply to normal service as soon as possible.
