The US military revealed it had intercepted an unintended attack by Iran just under four days after both sides stopped retaliatory fire, with uncertainty remaining over whether they will resume firing weapons at each other.
On the night of Tuesday, 28 July 2026, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that US forces successfully intercepted an "unintended attack" from Iran aimed at US forces in the Middle East region.
"At 17:45 Eastern Time (ET) today, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched multiple loitering missiles from Iran in an attempt to conduct an unintended attack on US forces stationed in the Middle East," CENTCOM posted on social media.
"All of Iran's missiles were successfully intercepted. US forces remain closely vigilant and at a high state of readiness."
A US official told CNN that initial assessments indicate Iran fired no more than four loitering missiles.
This attack occurred less than four days after the US and Iran ended retaliatory strikes over the past weekend, following 13 consecutive nights of clashes the previous week. It remains unclear how this event will affect the US's ceasefire stance.
On Monday, US President Donald Trump said the US had suspended attacks on Iran and claimed Iran desired negotiations. However, Esmail Bakaei, spokesperson for Iran's Foreign Ministry, responded by saying, "We are currently not engaged in any negotiations with the United States."
