A 35-year-old Indonesian man was strangled to death and swallowed whole by a giant python more than 7 meters long while walking home alone after a party. Relatives searched for him and found a swollen python, which when cut open revealed the deceased's body.
A tragic incident occurred again in North Maluku Province, Indonesia, when a 35-year-old man was swallowed whole by a giant python while walking home alone after attending a social gathering. Later, villagers found the victim’s body inside the snake’s stomach.
The deceased was identified as Hasim Lumbessi, age 35. Reports state that he left a village shop at about 3:00 a.m. local time on 27 July, after drinking and socializing with friends, and was walking home through the Waisakai village, passing a forested path in the Pelita Jaya Kobo area.
It is believed that the large python, approximately 7 meters long, was hiding in tall grass before lunging to bite his leg. It then coiled around his body until he died before swallowing him whole.
The chief of police in the Sula Islands revealed that relatives began searching for the missing man that afternoon after noticing he had not returned home. During the search, they found bloodstains on the ground along with his backpack, shoulder bag, and sandals. They then alerted villagers to assist in the search.
Later, at around 8:00 p.m., the search team discovered a trail of flattened grass leading deep into the forest. Following this trail, they found a large python with an abnormally swollen body that was barely able to move.
Villagers decided to cut open the snake’s stomach, where they found Hasim’s body. His body was swollen and discolored due to exposure to the snake’s digestive enzymes. The body was then taken back for religious funeral rites.
Following the incident, the Sula Islands police issued a warning urging the public to exercise caution when traveling through forested areas or working in gardens, as these areas remain natural habitats for wildlife. They advised people to avoid going into the forest alone and, if possible, to travel in pairs or groups to reduce the risk of similar incidents.
This tragedy occurred just one month after two other fatal python attacks in the same province.
On 23 June, a 25-year-old man was attacked by a python approximately 22 feet long while parking his motorcycle beside a dirt road on his way to work.
Earlier, on 9 June, 44-year-old Elizabeth Yamalau was attacked by a 25-foot python while tending cattle. Her husband found her partially swallowed by the snake before killing it.
Reports indicate the snakes involved were reticulated pythons, commonly found throughout Southeast Asia in forests, wetlands, canals, and near communities.
This species is among the largest snakes in the world and can prey on and swallow large animals, including in some cases constricting and swallowing humans.
Experts note that Indonesia has a large population of pythons due to its hot, humid climate and abundant forests. However, expanding human settlements and agricultural areas into forest regions have increased encounters between people and pythons, leading to more tragic incidents like this.
