Russia launched a new wave of ballistic missile strikes on Kyiv, causing damage to residential buildings and resulting in nine deaths, while Ukraine deployed drones to attack a Russian container ship, sinking it in the Black Sea.
On Saturday, 1 Aug 2026 GMT+7, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that Russia fired ballistic missiles heavily on Kyiv, causing at least nine deaths and dozens of injuries, while Ukraine sent drones to attack a large Russian container ship, sinking it to the bottom of the Black Sea.
The latest Russian attacks damaged or destroyed some residential buildings in Kyiv, leaving residents trapped under rubble, sparking multiple fires across the city, and causing power outages in some areas. Additionally, missiles fell near the Lithuanian embassy, damaging it.
Vitaliy Klitschko, mayor of Kyiv, reported more than 10 explosions from the Russian missile attacks during this assault.
Meanwhile, Ukraine sent drones to attack the Russian container ship "Yanina," sinking it to the bottom of the Black Sea, claiming the vessel was subject to sanctions.
Rosatom, the Russian government-owned company that owns the ship, confirmed the attack occurred 209 kilometers from the city of Novorossiysk, stating that the vessel was transporting civilian goods such as frozen food and construction materials.
Russian authorities condemned the act as "pirate-like behavior and looting," noting that all 17 crew members were safely rescued.
In recent months, Ukraine has escalated retaliatory attacks on Russia by targeting warehouses of Wildberries, Russia's largest online retailer, aiming to disrupt Russian logistics used to procure military equipment.
At the same time, Zelensky emphasized the urgent need to obtain licenses to produce U.S. Patriot air defense interceptor missiles, as Ukraine’s weapon stockpiles are running low. The Patriot is the only weapon capable of intercepting Russia's ballistic missiles.
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the U.S. has not yet agreed to grant Ukraine the rights to produce Patriot missiles but that negotiations are ongoing. He called it a "major step" and stressed caution about sharing advanced weapons technology, fearing it could be used against the U.S. in the future.
