A small plane crashed in Peru while carrying tourists on a flight over the famous Nazca Lines World Heritage Site, resulting in the deaths of all 13 passengers and crew.
Foreign news agencies reported that a small plane carrying tourists crashed in Peru while flying over the archaeological World Heritage site known as the Nazca Lines on Saturday (1 Aug 2026), killing all 11 passengers and 2 crew members aboard.
The incident occurred around 1:00 p.m. local time on Saturday in the Pueblo Viejo district, shortly after the plane took off from the airport in the city of Pisco, Peru.
Major Jorge Andrade told AFP, “Given the severity of the accident, there are no survivors. So far, we have recovered four bodies.” The cause of the crash and the identities of the passengers remain unclear at this time.
Meanwhile, a Spanish-language statement posted online by the Nazca municipal government expressed deepest condolences over the accident and offered sincere sympathies to the families of the deceased.
The statement added that the plane belonged to a local Peruvian airline called Aerodiana, which has not yet issued any official comment.
The Nazca Lines are a famous tourist attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in southern Peru. They are renowned for a series of enormous geoglyphs and geometric shapes etched into the desert floor by the ancient Nazca culture, featuring distinctive animal figures and long straight lines visible clearly from above.
This is not the first plane crash over this popular tourist site in recent decades. In 2022, a small tourist plane crashed while flying over the Nazca Lines, killing seven people. In 2010, another tourist plane crashed in the same area, resulting in six deaths.
