An attacker tried to bring a bomb into a restaurant in Moscow but was stopped by security personnel, causing the bomb to detonate outside the restaurant. This resulted in the deaths of the attacker, a security officer, and another victim.
On Saturday, 1 Aug 2026, Russian government media reported citing security officials that at least three people died and 21 were injured after a homemade bomb exploded outside an Italian restaurant near Kudrinskaya Square, close to central Moscow.
The explosion occurred at approximately 20:00 local time on Saturday. The restaurant is located in a high-rise building famous from the Stalin era, and a private party was taking place inside at the time.
The National Anti-Terrorism Committee (NAK) revealed that a woman carrying an explosive device tried to enter the restaurant but was stopped by security personnel, causing the bomb to detonate. The explosion instantly killed the woman, the security guard, and one restaurant patron.
Initial reports stated the explosion happened inside the restaurant's kitchen, but the restaurant later issued a statement clarifying that conditions inside were normal and that "the problem occurred outside the restaurant."
However, eyewitnesses described seeing people being carried out covered in blood following the blast.
It remains unclear who is behind the attack. After the incident, several roads around the square were temporarily closed. Meanwhile, a group of several dozen cyclists gathered nearby to prepare for a nighttime city ride had to cancel their activity.
