Iranian media has responded to Donald Trump's statement that Tehran requested the U.S. to halt new attacks, firmly asserting that the Iranian military is fully prepared to respond.
On Sunday, 2 Aug 2026 GMT+7, Iran's Mehr News Agency denied U.S. President Donald Trump's claim that Iran asked the U.S. to suspend new attacks, affirming that the country's military is fully ready to face any assault.
Mehr News Agency cited several military officials saying Trump’s statement “is just another lie,” and that the Iranian military “remains at the highest state of readiness and is prepared for any possible situation.”
This latest Iranian response came after Trump stated on Saturday that the U.S. was prepared to strike Iran, but Tehran and other Middle Eastern countries pleaded with him to hold off. He decided to suspend the attacks, conditional on quickly reaching an agreement with Iran.
“This includes the immediate, complete, and total reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, as well as ending Iran's nuclear threats,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
Meanwhile on Sunday, Iran’s Fars News Agency quoted sources close to Iran’s negotiation team saying, “As long as the U.S. maintains hostile measures, the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed.”
Iran has blockaded the Strait of Hormuz since the war began in March, requiring ships to obtain permission and pay passage fees before using this route. This has severely disrupted shipments, especially crude oil, causing global energy prices to rise.
