Two officials died after two helicopters collided on Sunday morning while carrying out firefighting duties west of Athens.
On Sunday, 2 Aug 2026, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis posted on social media that two firefighting helicopters collided and crashed, resulting in two deaths: one Greek coordinator and one Danish pilot, both aboard the same helicopter.
Meanwhile, two officials aboard the second helicopter survived: one British pilot and one Greek firefighting liaison officer. Both were taken to Athens Air Force Hospital 251 for treatment.
The Greek Fire Service stated that both helicopters were leased for wildfire suppression. At the time of the accident, the helicopters were operating in the Psatha area of Attica region, each carrying two crew members.
Wildfires have spread widely across Greece this summer. Greek meteorologist Theodor Giannaros told BBC News that more than 100,000 hectares (about 625,000 rai) have already been destroyed by the fires.
