Myanmar's presidential office released images showing 81-year-old former democratic leader Aung San Suu Kyi meeting with a representative of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Naypyidaw. This was her first official meeting with a foreign organization representative since her detention following the 2021 military coup, amid ongoing concerns about her health and detention conditions.
The Myanmar government disclosed that Aung San Suu Kyi, former State Counsellor and civilian government leader detained since the military coup in February 2021, met today (3 August) with Arnaud de Baecque, the ICRC representative to Myanmar.
A statement from Myanmar's presidential office said the meeting took place that same morning but did not reveal details of the discussions.
The ICRC later confirmed in a statement that "this visit was conducted according to the International Committee of the Red Cross's standards and procedures for visiting detainees, including allowing the ICRC representative to speak privately with Aung San Suu Kyi.
According to ICRC's operational guidelines, visits to detainees aim to provide an opportunity for them to exchange news and communicate with their families.
Following ICRC's established practices for detainee visits, observations and recommendations from the visit are shared only with the detaining authorities and are strictly confidential.
The ICRC will continue to coordinate with all relevant parties to maintain and expand access to detention facilities in Myanmar."
This publicly disclosed meeting is the first known occasion since the 2021 military coup that Aung San Suu Kyi has met with foreign officials or representatives. The coup led to her detention and multiple charges, which international human rights groups say are politically motivated to exclude her from the political arena.
Since the coup, Myanmar has faced intense conflict and ongoing civil war. Information about Suu Kyi's detention location and health has been scarce, raising international concerns about her wellbeing.
In April, following a military-controlled election criticized by observers, which resulted in Senior General Min Aung Hlaing becoming Myanmar's president, authorities announced a sentence reduction and transferred the 81-year-old Suu Kyi from prison to house arrest.
At the same time, Myanmar's presidential office released photos of Aung San Suu Kyi, including one showing her holding hands with a man believed to be the ICRC representative, and another of her cutting a birthday cake inscribed with "Happy Birthday Aunty Suu." Although foreign news agencies could not independently verify the images, AI-based image analysis found no signs of manipulation or AI generation.
This meeting took place amid international calls for Myanmar's government to improve human rights and allow greater access for international organizations to political detainees, as the country's political crisis and conflict have persisted for over five years.
