Myanmar's presidential office released photos of a meeting between 81-year-old former democratic leader Aung San Suu Kyi and a representative of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Naypyidaw. This marks her first official meeting with a foreign organization representative since her detainment following the 2021 military coup, amid concerns about her health and detention conditions.
The Myanmar government disclosed that Aung San Suu Kyi, the former State Counsellor and civilian government leader who has been detained since the military coup in February 2021, met today (3 Aug) with Arnaud de Bock, the ICRC's permanent representative in Myanmar.
A statement from Myanmar's presidential office said the meeting took place that morning but did not reveal details of the discussion, while the ICRC has yet to issue any official statement or comment regarding the meeting.
This meeting is the first publicly disclosed contact between Aung San Suu Kyi and foreign officials since the military seized power in 2021, which led to her detention and multiple charges. International human rights organizations have described many of these charges as politically motivated to exclude her from politics.
Since the coup, Myanmar has been mired in intense conflict and civil war that continues to this day. Information about Aung San Suu Kyi's detention location and physical condition has been scant, causing international concern over her health.
In April, following an election criticized as controlled by the military that resulted in Senior General Min Aung Hlaing becoming Myanmar’s president, authorities announced a sentence reduction and moved 81-year-old Aung San Suu Kyi from prison to house arrest.
The presidential office also released photos of Aung San Suu Kyi, including one showing her holding hands with a man believed to be the ICRC representative, and another of her cutting a birthday cake inscribed with "Happy Birthday Aunty Suu." Although foreign news agencies could not verify the photos' authenticity, AI-based image analysis found no signs of AI generation or manipulation.
This meeting occurs amid international pressure demanding Myanmar's government improve human rights conditions and allow international organizations greater access to political detainees, as the country's political crisis and conflict have persisted for over five years.
