Iranian officials deny Donald Trump's statement that new negotiations between the U.S. and Iran will begin Monday afternoon, confirming that no talks are taking place.
On Monday, 3 Aug 2026 GMT+7, Esmail Bagaei, spokesperson for Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed that his country is not engaged in negotiations with the United States, following President Donald Trump's earlier claim that new talks would start this afternoon.
"We are currently not negotiating with the United States. Our talks are with Oman to ensure security for navigation through the Strait of Hormuz," Bagaei said during the weekly press briefing.
Iran's latest response came after Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday that new negotiations with Iran would begin Monday afternoon, covering issues including the Strait of Hormuz and ultimately Iran's nuclear disarmament.
Previously, Iran also denied Trump's claim that he had ordered a suspension of a major new attack on Iran—the largest since World War II—after Tehran's government and U.S. allies such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar requested a halt.
The U.S. and Iran have been in a state of war since 28 Feb 2026, when the U.S. and Israel launched attacks on Iran, despite both sides reaching a preliminary ceasefire agreement in April and signing a memorandum of understanding with conditions aimed at finalizing a peace deal in June.
During that time, Trump repeatedly claimed that the peace deal was close to completion, yet fighting resumed repeatedly. He had previously warned of wiping out Iran before reversing course, citing ongoing diplomatic efforts.
The ceasefire collapsed in July after Iran attacked cargo ships in the Strait of Hormuz, prompting the U.S. to launch a series of attacks on Iran lasting 13 consecutive nights, to which Iran responded by striking U.S. military assets in Arab countries.
The attacks from both sides ceased last week, with Trump claiming he ordered a pause to make way for negotiations. However, it remains unclear whether any talks have actually taken place, as Iran continues to deny them.
