An outbreak of severe diarrhea caused by the Cyclospora parasite in the U.S. has resulted in two deaths after spreading to nearly every state, with close to 7,000 confirmed cases nationwide.
On Monday, 3 Aug 2026 GMT+7, Michigan health officials confirmed the first two deaths linked to severe diarrhea caused by Cyclospora parasite infections, which have been spreading across many states since May and have sickened thousands.
Michigan health authorities reported that both deceased had serious preexisting health conditions, which may have been worsened by Cyclospora infection and dehydration, ultimately leading to their deaths.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated that this foodborne illness has now spread to 45 of the 50 U.S. states, with nearly 7,000 laboratory-confirmed cases nationwide.
Although thousands have been infected, the CDC noted that deaths from Cyclospora infections are rare, as it "is typically not life-threatening."
Michigan is considered the outbreak’s center, reporting over 11,000 diarrhea cases and 193 hospitalizations, even though many patients have not yet had laboratory confirmation that Cyclospora caused their illness.
Cyclospora parasites thrive in warm weather, infect the intestines, and spread through fecal contamination. Past outbreaks have often occurred when people consumed fruits or vegetables irrigated with fecally contaminated water.
The CDC recommends washing all produce under running water, including items labeled as pre-washed. However, washing alone may not eliminate this parasite, so cooking food to at least 70°C (158°F) is advised to kill it.
Officials have linked this year’s widespread outbreak to romaine lettuce imported from Taylor Farms in Mexico, a major supplier to numerous U.S. restaurants.
One affected chain is Taco Bell, a well-known fast-food franchise, which has removed romaine lettuce from this supplier from its entire menu. Taylor Farms has also voluntarily recalled the affected romaine lettuce shipments.
