On Monday, 3 Aug 2026 GMT+7, U.S. President Donald Trump condemned the Iranian government as “incredibly two-faced” after Iran denied opening new talks with the U.S., despite Trump’s claim that Iran itself requested the talks to end the conflict now in its sixth month.
Trump revealed on Sunday (2 Aug) that the U.S. and Iran would begin a new round of discussions Monday afternoon. He said he had canceled a major planned strike to make way for agreements regarding the Strait of Hormuz and Tehran’s nuclear program.
However, on Monday (3 Aug), Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghai confirmed that “there are no negotiations with America” and that the talks held were only with Oman to establish a temporary safe shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz.
Shortly afterward, Trump posted on Truth Social accusing Iran’s leaders of having “begged” (or, as he put it, “pleaded”) for the meeting, only to later proudly deny it.
Later, Trump told reporters at the White House that the talks are indeed ongoing. He noted that Tehran issued a new statement that no longer denies discussions and expressed confidence that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen to commercial shipping on Tuesday as the first phase of an agreement, followed by talks on the nuclear program in the second phase.
Trump also warned that this is Iran’s “last chance” to sign a deal before the U.S. takes decisive action, which it can initiate at any time it chooses.
Meanwhile, the U.S.-Iran conflict has entered its sixth month, affecting the global economy, driving oil prices higher, and expanding tensions into the Red Sea and Egypt. American military losses have added political pressure on Trump domestically.
Regional diplomatic efforts continue, with leaders and representatives from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Oman engaging both the U.S. and Iran to seek ways to reduce tensions in the Middle East.
