On 4 August 2026, NHK news reported that Tama Zoo in Tokyo found three female lions dead after falling ill amid extreme heat. Veterinarians suspect heatstroke may be involved. In mid-July, 10 of the 16 lions began showing symptoms—some were too weak to stand, others lost their appetite. Despite efforts to lower their body temperature and administer medication, a 3-year-old female lion died on 28 July, followed by an 11-year-old female on 31 July, and a 15-year-old female on 2 August.
The zoo stated that the cause of death has not been confirmed pending further tests. Preliminary autopsy findings showed all three lions suffered severe dehydration and multiple organ failures. Currently, three other lions remain under treatment. The zoo emphasized it takes these deaths seriously and is committed to caring for the sick lions and closely monitoring their health. Tama Zoo has not yet set a date to reopen the lion exhibit to the public.
