Bob Montgomery, a charity cyclist, has died at age 82 after completing his final mission cycling across Australia to raise funds for a motor neuron disease organization.
Foreign news agencies reported on 4 Aug 2026 that Bob Montgomery, aged 82, who cycled 3,300 miles (5,300 kilometers) across Australia to raise charity funds, died peacefully last Monday, just one day after completing his final mission.
The Montgomery family issued a statement on social media saying Bob's death was "unexpected" but he passed away "peacefully" just one day after finishing his mission named "One Last Ride," which raised about AUD 105,000.
The statement noted this was his sixth fundraising ride supporting the motor neuron disease charity (MND NSW), a cause he was deeply committed to.
Liam O'Meara, CEO of MND NSW, said on Monday the Montgomery family gathered in Sydney to celebrate the mission's success, but shortly after the celebration, Bob suddenly became ill and later passed away.
Bob and his grandson Tom Malcolm began their journey from Broome in Western Australia heading to Bowral, southwest of Sydney, last Sunday (2 Aug), taking six weeks amid applause from local communities.
The statement added that Jenny, Bob's wife of 59 years, was by his side during his "peaceful passing," and he continued to "share stories and messages of strong determination just hours before he died."
Bob told Australia’s ABC News that his main inspiration came from meeting people along the way and enjoying "a beer or two" at each stop.
"There are many stories and a lot of people we met who were ready to help and donate. It’s been wonderful," Bob said.
Bob was inspired to undertake these charity rides after losing a cousin to motor neuron disease (MND). He had raised nearly AUD 300,000 in previous rides.
