U.S. authorities arrested a 38-year-old man carrying numerous firearms and ammunition at President Donald Trump's golf course in California. Officials are intensifying investigations into his motive and considering prosecution.
U.S. authorities apprehended 38-year-old Janine John Tele from Downey, California, with multiple firearms and ammunition inside President Donald Trump's golf course in Rancho Palos Verdes, Los Angeles, California.
The arrest took place on Sunday afternoon after federal plainclothes agents observed him taking photos and videos around the golf course, displaying behavior consistent with surveilling security measures ahead of the president's arrival.
During the arrest, officers found a 16-round magazine loaded with hollow-point bullets in the suspect’s pants pocket. A vehicle search uncovered a loaded handgun along with additional magazines containing hollow-point ammunition.
Later, sheriff's deputies working with the FBI’s counterterrorism unit searched the suspect’s residence and discovered an assault-style rifle, handguns, bulletproof vest, high-capacity magazines, ammunition, two radios, and several notebooks containing messages officials described as concerning.
Currently, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office is reviewing whether to file charges against the suspect after receiving the case file from investigators Tuesday morning.
This incident occurred just two days before Trump traveled to attend a Republican fundraising event. Trump arrived at the golf course by helicopter Tuesday evening to join the Republican National Committee’s fundraiser, but the visit was closed to media coverage.
The event comes amid heightened security concerns after multiple assassination attempts and threats against Trump since his presidential campaign announcement. In July 2024, he was shot during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, sustaining a minor ear injury, with one attendee killed. Subsequently, armed men were arrested at Trump's golf courses in Florida and an armed attempt was made on a Washington D.C. event in April.
Trump’s visit to California—a key Democratic stronghold—aimed to raise funds and promote policies ahead of the midterm elections. Just hours before his arrival, California Governor Gavin Newsom called on the federal government to expedite disaster relief funding for areas affected by major wildfires in Los Angeles, emphasizing that this issue should transcend political disputes.
