Iran has revealed that it has reached a joint agreement with Oman on designating a maritime route through the Strait of Hormuz, but stressed that navigation remains unsafe due to the U.S. naval blockade.
On Wednesday, 5 Aug 2026 GMT+7, Esmail Bagaei, spokesperson for Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, disclosed that his country had reached an agreement with Oman regarding the maritime route through the Strait of Hormuz. He did not provide further details other than stating the agreement is in its final stages.
However, Bagaei warned that the agreement with Oman alone cannot guarantee safe navigation through the strait because security is still affected by the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports.
Later, Qasem Garibabadi, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister, told Irna news agency that this new route will be temporary and could be operational for two to four months. He did not offer further details, including whether any fees would be charged.
Meanwhile, neither the United States nor Oman has issued any official comment regarding this agreement.
Since the U.S. and Israel began attacks on Iran in late February, Tehran has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz almost continuously, causing severe fluctuations in global oil prices.
On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump warned that Iran would be “hit hard” if the strait was not reopened “soon.”
Bagaei’s statement came after senior U.S. officials indicated progress in talks that might allow cargo shipments to resume by the end of the week, although Iran continues to deny negotiating with the U.S. or planning to do so.
