Guatemala's National Disaster Reduction Coordination Office stated that the volcano's activity is gradually decreasing, but ash and volcanic rock debris continue to accumulate at the summit, posing risks of collapse. This could trigger pyroclastic flows—hot ash currents—descending through surrounding valleys. Additionally, expected rainfall may cause lahars—fast-moving mud and volcanic debris flows along riverbeds and valleys—prompting authorities to maintain close surveillance.
Meanwhile, at least three districts remain under a red alert, the highest warning level, to expedite evacuation of residents from high-risk zones and relocation to shelters.
Fuego volcano is located about 50 kilometers southwest of Guatemala City, the capital of Guatemala. It has been continuously spewing lava and ash since last Monday. The eruption has produced pyroclastic flows down the surrounding valleys, leading authorities to evacuate at least 1,699 people from nearby towns and communities.
