Houthi Rebels Attack Yemeni Government Military Camps, Killing at Least 30

Houthi rebels attacked military camps of the Yemeni government army in central Yemen, resulting in at least 30 deaths. They claimed that Saudi Arabia, which supports the Yemeni government, is building up forces to attack them.

Foreign news agencies reported that the Houthis fired missiles and deployed drones against several military camps of the Yemeni government's Emergency Forces in the Al-Ruwaik district of Marib province and Al-Abr district of Hadramawt province, killing at least 30 soldiers.

Qasim Bahibah, Yemen's Minister of Health, condemned the attack as a "sneak attack" aimed at destroying national security and stability. However, he did not specify an official death toll.

A spokesperson for the Houthi rebel group, which controls most of northwestern Yemen and is backed by Iran, said the attacks targeted Saudi Arabia's large military buildup preparing to invade them. Saudi Arabia leads the coalition supporting the Yemeni government during the civil war.

However, the Saudi-led coalition or government has not yet commented on the attack or the Houthis’ allegations.

The U.S. Embassy in Yemen stated that the Houthi attacks are "cowardly" acts and constitute "terrorism against the Yemeni people."

Yemen has suffered severe damage from the civil war that began in 2014 when the Houthis ousted the government from the capital, Sanaa. The conflict escalated in 2015 after a Saudi-led Arab coalition intervened to restore the government but failed.

A United Nations report states that the fighting has caused over 150,000 deaths and triggered one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, with more than 22 million people needing various forms of assistance.

The conflict between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia eased after an informal ceasefire took effect in 2022 but has recently intensified as the Houthis declared a naval blockade of Saudi Arabia and launched continuous attacks on the kingdom in recent weeks.
