Typhoon "Dolphin" is moving closer to southern Japan, prompting the closure of Naha Airport and cancellation of all flights. Residents are gradually evacuating to shelters, while three people have been injured.
On 8 Aug 2026 GMT+7, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported that Typhoon "Dolphin" was slowly approaching the southern islands of Japan. By Friday morning local time, the typhoon was near Yoron Island and moving westward toward Okinawa's main island, with sustained maximum winds of 144 kilometers per hour. Okinawa is expected to face strong gusts, heavy rain, and high waves continuing through Sunday. Authorities urged people to stay indoors and closely monitor official warnings.
NHK reported that authorities had to close Naha International Airport on Okinawa Island, canceling all domestic and international flights. Evacuation centers were opened to accommodate residents, and three people have suffered minor injuries.
Okinawa Prefectural Government reported that three men aged 70 suffered minor injuries; two were knocked down by strong gusts of wind, and one fell from a chair while preparing for the storm. Naha International Airport declared a full-day closure on Friday, resulting in the cancellation of all incoming and outgoing flights domestically and internationally. Meanwhile, at least 240 residents have evacuated to shelters across Okinawa Prefecture.
The typhoon's influence also affected parts of Kyushu Island, especially Kumamoto Prefecture, which recently endured a severe earthquake last week. Residents with damaged homes are hastily covering roofs and walls with blue tarpaulins to protect against rain that could worsen the damage.
