On Saturday, 8 Aug 2026 GMT+7, Hamas issued a statement affirming their readiness to implement the U.S.-supported peace plan in the Gaza Strip. They informed the “Board of Peace” under President Donald Trump that they are willing to hand over weapons to the new Palestinian Authority executive committee.
Hamas officials said Hamas and other armed groups are ready to begin implementing the agreement and proceed to “phase two” if approved by Israel, which must also comply with the agreement. Hamas urged the U.S. government to accelerate pressure on Israel to accept this agreement.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, facing a major election in October and pressure from right-wing factions domestically, responded by stating that Israel does not approve the “draft agreement” proposed by the Board of Peace.
Phase two of the agreement includes the disarmament of Hamas and the withdrawal of Israeli troops. After talks between Netanyahu and Nikolay Mladenov, a senior representative of the Board of Peace, Mladenov adjusted the stance, stating that Israel will only withdraw troops from Gaza once Hamas is fully disarmed.
Israel continues its attacks on the Gaza Strip. Recently, Gaza officials reported that Israeli gunfire killed one Palestinian in Deir al-Balah city and injured about 10 others, including children, despite a recent reduction in airstrike intensity to mainly gunfire and drone use.
Gaza's Ministry of Health stated that since the ceasefire agreement supported by Trump last October, 1,258 Palestinians have died from Israeli attacks, while the Israeli military reported losing 5 soldiers.
