Saysamphanh Phomvihane, President of Laos National Assembly, Passes Away at Age 70

Saysamphanh Phomvihane, President of the Laos National Assembly and member of the Political Bureau of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, has died from severe vasculitis at the age of 70.

On 9 August 2026, the Central Committee of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party announced that Mr. Saysamphanh Phomvihane, member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee and President of the National Assembly of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, passed away at 11:18 a.m. on 8 August.The cause of death was severe vasculitis. The announcement stated that this loss is a major setback for the Party, government, and all ethnic groups of the Lao people.

The announcement from the Central Committee of the Party, National Assembly, government, the Lao Front for National Development, and the Phomvihane family described Mr. Saysamphanh as a key leader of the Central Committee with experience and ability, having held leadership positions at local and various national levels.

It also noted that throughout his career, Mr. Saysamphanh devoted his knowledge, skills, and energy to the Party's revolutionary mission, the country's development, and the well-being of all ethnic groups in Laos. The Central Committee and government called on officials, Party members, armed forces, and the entire population to transform their grief into strength by preserving unity and solidarity under the leadership of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party.
