An alarm sounded at a nuclear reactor of a power plant in Fukui Prefecture, Japan, causing the reactor to shut down automatically. Officials confirmed that no radioactive substances leaked.
On Sunday, 9 Aug 2026 GMT+7, Kansai Electric Power Company announced that reactor number 3 at the Ohi Nuclear Power Plant in Fukui Prefecture automatically shut down after an alarm was triggered. An investigation into the cause is underway, but no radioactive leakage occurred.
Kansai Electric explained that the alarm sounded around 23:55 on Saturday, indicating an abnormality in the magnetic field generator equipment connected to the reactor's turbine. This caused both the generator and the reactor to shut down automatically.
This pressurized water reactor (PWR) with a capacity of 1.18 million kilowatts, which was shut down, will reach 35 years of operation in December and is scheduled for its regular inspection in October.
Back in April 2000, a similar malfunction occurred with the same type of equipment at reactor number 2 of the Mihama Nuclear Power Plant, operated by the same company in Fukui Prefecture. This also led to automatic shutdown of the generator and reactor. That reactor is currently in the process of being decommissioned.
