Iran has appointed "Mohsen Rezaee," former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, as the new head of the Supreme National Security Council amid ongoing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.
On 9 Aug 2026 GMT+7, AFP reported that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian appointed 71-year-old Major General Mohsen Rezaee, former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), as Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), the country's top security body.
A spokesperson for the Iranian president said the appointment follows the resignation of Mohammad Bagher Soltani as SNSC secretary to take on a new role. The office of Iran's Supreme Leader stated that Soltani will become the political advisor to Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei.
Reports note that Major General Rezaee has extensive military and security experience, having served as IRGC commander from 1981 to 1997, covering most of the Iran-Iraq war period. He later held several high-ranking political positions and served as a military advisor to Iran's Supreme Leader.
