The death toll from the powerful earthquake in Colombia has risen to at least 111, while the government has declared a national emergency to expedite aid to the earthquake victims.
On Monday, 10 Aug 2026 GMT+7, the Colombian government declared a national emergency after a strong 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Chocó province in the west of the country, causing widespread severe damage and numerous fatalities.
Colombian President Abelardo De La Espriella confirmed the death toll has risen to at least 111, with at least 87 injured, 61 buildings collapsed, and 1,575 homes damaged.
In addition, the earthquake caused damage to 18 public health centers, 52 schools, 17 community centers, and 18 roads.
Emergency teams nationwide are racing against time to rescue people trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings and homes. The president emphasized, “The highest priority is to try to save those still trapped beneath the debris.”
Mr. De La Espriella also announced he will travel to Quibdó, the capital of Chocó province, one of the regions most severely affected by the quake.
