On Monday, 10 Aug 2026 GMT+7, Philippine rescue teams reported that floods, landslides, and accidents triggered by nine days of continuous heavy rain have resulted in at least 16 deaths in the northern part of the country, influenced by the southwest monsoon and tropical cyclones.
In several areas, such as the resort city of Baguio, accumulated rainfall exceeded 1,413 millimeters, which is 47% above the normal total for August. Meanwhile, the Metro Manila area experienced nearly 90% of its monthly average rainfall.
Philippine officials confirmed 16 disaster-related deaths from various causes, including landslides burying homes, drowning, falling trees, and electrocution, with several people still reported missing.
Additionally, the Philippine government ordered temporary closures of schools and government agencies across Luzon, the country’s main island, after the storms damaged over 2,400 classrooms and flooded multiple roads in Manila, disrupting travel.
Rescue officials continue carefully searching for missing persons due to ongoing rain and risks of further landslides. The Minister of Public Works stated that water levels are gradually receding and stressed the urgent need for serious long-term drainage system improvements.
