Donald Trump demanded that Iran pay compensation to those who died in Iranian attacks, responding to Tehran's earlier demand that the U.S. pay war reparations in exchange for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
On Monday, 10 Aug 2026 GMT+7, U.S. President Donald Trump called on Iran to compensate people he claimed were killed in wars, attacks, and protests. This marked an escalation in harsh rhetoric against Tehran as hopes for an emergency deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz began to fade.
Trump stated this was in response to Iran's conditions that the U.S. comply with demands to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, including reparations for damages from U.S. and Israeli attacks over the past five months.
“I also demand compensation from Iran for everyone they have killed and severely injured with roadside bombs and numerous conflicts, which they are notorious for,” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform.
Oil prices, which had already risen following statements from Iran, continued to climb after Trump's post. Brent crude prices increased 4.25% at 17:20 GMT on Monday.
This demand for compensation is a topic Trump had never previously raised. The U.S. president confirmed it would become part of all future negotiations with Iranian leaders, including claims for reparations to families of hundreds of thousands of protesters he alleged were killed by Iran.
Trump also said Iran should compensate the "families of those killed in the USS Cole incident," referring to the attack on the U.S. warship in Yemen on 12 Oct 2000 that killed 17 U.S. sailors. However, this event was confirmed to be carried out by Al-Qaeda, not Iran.
“Furthermore, in negotiations with Iran, they must be held responsible for damage and losses to people in Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and Gaza!” Trump wrote in a second post.
Earlier, Iran stated it was close to a final agreement with Oman to establish a new shipping route in the Strait of Hormuz but reiterated that the U.S. must meet conditions including paying reparations, lifting sanctions, and ending military measures before the strait would reopen.
Trump, who has said attacks on Iran aim to deter the Islamic Republic from developing nuclear weapons and reduce regional threats, faces intense pressure to end the deeply unpopular war ahead of the November midterm elections.
Currently, not only has the U.S. failed to force Iran to withdraw from its nuclear program, but Iran has effectively taken control of the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. military efforts over several months, including a two-week airstrike campaign in July, have failed to break Iran’s hold over the strait.
