On 11 Aug 2026 GMT+7, the Japan Meteorological Agency warned that Tropical Storm Chan-hom is moving westward, an unusual path for storms that typically travel from west to east following the prevailing westerly winds. The storm is expected to approach eastern Japan, including areas around Tokyo, and may make landfall on Tuesday, 11 Aug 2026.
Reports indicate this storm will bring heavy rain and strong gusts to eastern and northeastern Japan. The Kanto-Koshin, Tohoku, Hokuriku, Tokai regions, and Niigata Prefecture may experience rainfall exceeding 30 millimeters per hour, with some parts of the Kanto region possibly seeing heavy rain up to 50 millimeters per hour.
The Japan Meteorological Agency advises residents to be cautious of landslides, flooding in low-lying areas, river overflows, and strong currents, as well as strong gusty winds and high waves. Lightning and tornadoes may occur in some areas. Due to the storm's unusual track, coastal wind directions may shift rapidly, causing sudden increases in wave heights.
Authorities also warned tourists that strong winds and heavy rain could disrupt public transportation systems. Travelers are advised to check the latest warnings and risk levels for landslides, flooding, and heavy rain before setting out and to adjust travel plans if conditions become unsafe.
