Vietnam has begun building the largest and most modern anti-submarine warship produced domestically, advancing its defense industry development to reduce dependence on imported weaponry.
On 11 Aug 2026 GMT+7, foreign news agencies reported that Vietnam has started constructing an anti-submarine warship described by the government as the largest and most advanced the country has ever built. This project is part of efforts to upgrade the defense industry and enhance the capacity to manufacture military equipment domestically.
The Vietnam People's Army newspaper reported that the warship is being constructed at the Song Thu shipyard of the Ministry of Defense in Da Nang. Most of the ship's weaponry and military equipment will be developed or assembled within the country. The report emphasized that this project reflects the policy to develop an independent and self-reliant defense industry, strengthening domestic capabilities for both military and civilian use with modern features.
Over the past decades, the Vietnamese Navy has undertaken major modernization projects, including purchasing submarines from Russia while also increasing the number of domestically produced missile boats and patrol vessels.
