A shooting occurred at a high school in Georgia, U.S., where a 9th-grade student was injured after arguing with a classmate in a bathroom. The 14-year-old male classmate fired the gun and fled but was arrested by police within about one hour.
The shooting took place inside Warner Robins High School in Warner Robins, Georgia, U.S., on the afternoon of Wednesday, 12 August local time. A 9th-grade male student, equivalent to grade 9 or Mathayom 3, was shot and injured, while the suspect, a 14-year-old male student, has been taken into police custody.
Matt Malton, Houston County Sheriff, stated the incident occurred around 14:15 inside the school bathroom, where a group of students was present. Two students began arguing, which escalated into a fight.
Then, one of the students drew a gun and shot his classmate before fleeing the school on foot.
The school police officer reached the injured student within seconds and applied a tourniquet to provide first aid before rushing him to the hospital. Police reported the injuries are not life-threatening.
Police reviewed CCTV footage and tracked the suspect’s escape route, leading to his arrest around 15:20, approximately one hour after the incident, in the Huntington Hills neighborhood, located less than 800 meters across from the school.
Police confirmed the suspect is a 14-year-old male student in the same grade (9th grade or Mathayom 3) at the same school, and the injured student is also in the same grade.
This school shooting in the U.S. happened just about one week after the new school term began, prompting a large law enforcement presence to secure the area.
Richard Rogers, the school principal in Houston County, announced that Warner Robins High School will be closed for students on Thursday and Friday, with staff off on Thursday. The school has organized crisis counseling teams to support students and staff affected by the incident. Police continue to investigate the exact cause and motive behind the shooting.
