Indonesia has canceled the tsunami warning following a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Flores Island, prompting panic and evacuations to higher ground in multiple areas. At least two people have died and two others are injured.
Early this morning local time, a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off the northern coast of Flores Island in eastern Indonesia, with its epicenter located about 10 kilometers beneath the sea, 68 kilometers from the city of Ende, triggering a tsunami warning and causing widespread evacuation to higher ground.
The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) detected waves in several areas, but sea levels measured did not indicate a severe threat. The highest wave was recorded at around 94 centimeters in Maumere, Ende district, leading authorities to subsequently lift the tsunami warning.
Nevertheless, the intense shaking caused damage to many buildings and homes, particularly in Maumere and East Nusa Tenggara province. Reports include building collapses, and some hospitals relocated patients outdoors for their safety.
Initial reports confirm at least two fatalities and two injuries. Rescue teams and search and relief personnel have been dispatched to multiple locations to assess damage and locate additional victims.
Meanwhile, several aftershocks have followed the main quake, including magnitudes of 5.6 and 5.9, causing many residents to avoid returning indoors. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
Authorities are urgently assessing the damage in affected areas and have warned the public to closely follow official announcements as aftershocks may still occur.
