Ukraine Launches Largest Attack on Russia Moscow Claims Over 800 Drones Shot Down

Ukraine has launched one of its largest attacks on Russia since the war began. Meanwhile, Russia claims to have intercepted over 800 drones sent by Ukraine, though several key sites were still struck.

On Sunday, 16 Aug 2026 GMT+7, Russian authorities reported that their military destroyed more than 800 drones sent by Ukraine in an overnight attack. This marked one of Ukraine's largest air assaults, with at least six deaths confirmed initially.

Russia's Ministry of Defense revealed that drone interceptions occurred across 17 regions, particularly in the south, west, and areas around Moscow. In the Moscow region alone, 187 drones were intercepted.

Significant targets hit included the warehouse of Wildberries, Russia's largest online retailer, causing a major fire at its 250,000-square-meter facility in the Moscow region. Ukraine claims this warehouse supplied military equipment to Russian forces and said it had attacked seven out of ten of the company's logistics centers.

The Ukrainian military also reported striking a factory producing solid rocket fuel used in various Russian missiles in the Rostov region.

Russia continued its counterattacks with drones and missiles targeting Kyiv and other cities including Kremenchuk, Kryvyi Rih, and Sumy. These strikes killed two people in Kryvyi Rih and one in Sumy, with several others injured.

The Ukrainian Air Force stated it was unable to intercept any ballistic missiles launched by Russia overnight, highlighting a severe shortage of ammunition and air defense missiles.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said last week that Russia had launched over 1,550 drones, more than 1,560 guided bombs, and 62 missiles, urging European countries to expedite the supply of additional intercept missiles. However, no concrete support has been confirmed so far.
