Trumps Special Envoy Meets Hamas Leader to Advance Gaza Peace Plan

Jared Kushner, Trump's special envoy, met with Hamas leaders in Egypt to discuss advancing the enforcement of the Gaza peace plan after Israel had previously rejected it.

Foreign news agencies reported on Sunday, 16 Aug 2026 GMT+7, that Jared Kushner, the U.S. special envoy to the Middle East and Donald Trump's son-in-law, participated in important talks with Hamas leaders regarding the implementation of the U.S.-backed Gaza peace plan.

Palestinian officials told the BBC that Trump's son-in-law met with a delegation led by Khalil al-Hayya, the Hamas leader, in Egypt on Sunday.

In July, Trump's "Board of Peace" committee announced it had reached an agreement for the "complete disarmament" of Hamas and other armed groups in Gaza.

However, last week Israel rejected Donald Trump's 15-point plan, which called for the Israeli military to withdraw from Gaza and for Gaza's reconstruction under a new civilian Palestinian government, prompting eight Muslim countries to issue a statement on Sunday condemning Israel's refusal.

Trump leads the Board of Peace, an international organization initially established to create peace in Gaza, which later expanded its scope to address conflicts worldwide.

The meeting between Kushner and al-Hayya was the first high-level encounter since the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip last year.

Reports state that Nikolay Mladenov, envoy of the Board of Peace, and former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair attended the meeting alongside representatives from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, who served as mediators in this peace effort.

There has been no official statement detailing the discussions, but it is believed the talks focused on concrete disarmament of Hamas, Israeli troop withdrawal, and humanitarian assistance.

While in Egypt, Kushner also met Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. Israeli media report that Kushner, Mladenov, and Blair are scheduled to meet Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu on Monday, 17 Aug 2026 GMT+7, to continue promoting Trump's plan.
