Heavy Rain Triggers Landslide in South Korea, Killing 1 and Injuring 3 Southern Areas Flooded

Heavy rain battered southern South Korea, causing a landslide that buried a residential building in Geoje city, resulting in one death and three injuries. Some areas recorded up to 800 millimeters of accumulated rainfall.

A landslide occurred in South Korea after continuous heavy rainfall in the southern region, causing one death and three injuries, according to South Korean media reports on Monday, 17 August.

The incident took place at an apartment building in Geoje city, South Gyeongsang Province, when soil from a mountain collapsed onto the building’s first floor, prompting rescue teams to rush to aid those trapped inside.

Yonhap News reported that rescuers managed to help three residents escape, but one of them was hospitalized and later died. The other two sustained injuries.

The landslide happened amid ongoing heavy rain in many southern areas, with the Korea Meteorological Administration issuing heavy rain warnings after some spots recorded up to 800 millimeters of rain since Saturday, accompanied by thunder and lightning.

Geoje city, a coastal city in the south not far from Busan, was heavily affected by the downpour. Several rivers overflowed their banks, and many roads were flooded, causing traffic paralysis and trapping some residents.

South Korea’s Ministry of the Interior and Safety said about 100 people in Geoje city are being evacuated due to fears of further landslides, while authorities are urgently assisting around 20 people still trapped in the disaster area.

Officials remain closely monitoring the situation as the heavy rain heightens risks of flooding and landslides in southern regions, especially in hillside areas and communities near rivers.
