British Couple Die in Helicopter Crash During Honeymoon in Greece

A British couple traveled to a popular Greek island for their honeymoon, but the helicopter they were on crashed and caught fire, killing both of them and the pilot.

Foreign news agencies reported on Tuesday, 18 Aug 2026 GMT+7, citing Greek police disclosures that a helicopter crashed and caught fire on the island of Sifnos, Greece, on Monday (17 Aug). The accident resulted in the deaths of a young British couple and the pilot.

The deceased were Alexander Cromie and Marie Ebert, newlyweds vacationing in Greece for their honeymoon.

According to local media, the couple departed in a private Bell 206 helicopter from the village of Markopoulo near Athens to Sifnos, a popular tourist destination. However, the aircraft crashed just a few meters short of the landing pad, killing the couple and the Greek pilot.

The Greek Civil Aviation Safety Authority told BBC that it is currently investigating the cause. Investigators planned to visit the site on Tuesday to collect evidence and interview witnesses.

A spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office said, “We express our deepest condolences to the families during this difficult time. We are coordinating with Greek authorities and providing full consular assistance.”

Blackstone, the asset management firm where Cromie worked, and Ben & Company, where Ebert was a senior consultant, also issued statements expressing their condolences on the loss of both individuals.

Local police told The Times magazine that the accident occurred shortly before the helicopter was due to land at 18:15 local time. Manolis Fundulakis, deputy mayor of Sifnos who arrived at the scene later, told local news website Newsit that the helicopter was “almost completely destroyed.”

Another deputy mayor, Yannis Rafelletos, told BBC that two bodies were found in the wreckage, with a third nearby. Residents near the crash site reported hearing unusual engine noises as the helicopter was about to land, but the cause of the crash remains unclear.
