Hangzhou police detained a local government official and a company executive accused of sexually assaulting a woman at a karaoke bar after attending a business dinner and gathering. Authorities said the victim was pushed and fell, sustaining injuries. The case has sparked intense criticism on Chinese social media, especially concerning workplace power abuse and the drinking culture used to build business relationships.
Chinese authorities detained two individuals—a local government official and a businessman—accused of sexually assaulting a woman inside a karaoke bar in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. The case has caused widespread public outrage in China, focusing particularly on abuse of power and hierarchical relationships in the workplace.
The incident occurred on the evening of 26 July after the victim attended a business dinner attended by executives from several companies and government officials, before proceeding to a karaoke venue in Hangzhou.
An investigative team established by the Hangzhou municipal government disclosed that police were alerted by citizens about the assault. Because the case involved state employees and allegations of criminal acts, the Communist Party of China Committee of Hangzhou and local government took the matter seriously and immediately set up a task force to investigate.
Preliminary investigations found that two suspects, surnamed Zhao—a senior executive of a company—and Yu, a government official in Binjiang District, Hangzhou, were accused of molesting the victim inside the karaoke bar after dining and socializing together.
During the incident, Zhao allegedly pushed the victim to the floor, causing injury to her lower back. The victim is currently receiving hospital treatment, and initial forensic assessment classified her injuries as minor level 2 according to Chinese standards.
Police have detained Zhao and Yu as criminal suspects, and the investigation is ongoing.
Meanwhile, Yu has been dismissed from his government post, and Zhao has been removed from his company position. Disciplinary and supervisory authorities have received related information and will conduct investigations following party discipline, regulations, and laws. Officials emphasized there will be no leniency or exemptions for wrongdoing.
The case has become a hot topic on Chinese social media. On 19 August, related topics ranked among the top seven out of 50 trending subjects on Weibo, with one topic receiving over 68 million views and others ranging from 1 to 6 million views.
Interest surged after authorities released official investigation results, with many users questioning the behavior of those involved and the drinking culture at Chinese business social events.
One Weibo user commented that attending social drinking events does not imply consent to being harmed, nor does alcohol consumption mean consent to abuse.
Another widely discussed issue is China’s "drinking culture for socializing," a custom of eating and drinking alcohol to build business and social relationships. Reports indicated the victim was pressured to consume large amounts of alcohol before being taken to the karaoke bar.
Another user questioned why women are expected to drink alongside men and expressed hope that this practice will end.
China Women’s News published an opinion article stating that addressing only the individuals involved is insufficient. It called for establishing clear "boundaries of business interaction" through institutional measures to close gaps where authority may overlap with social obligations.
The incident has also sparked debate about power relations in the workplace, especially since one suspect is a senior government official and the other is a company executive connected to state-related business sectors.
Arrests in sexual assault cases occurring during social gatherings are uncommon in China, particularly when state officials are implicated, which has drawn special public attention to this case.
Beyond victim protection, public criticism reflects broader questions about how clearly defined business practices and socializing cultures should be to prevent networking or socializing from becoming tools of coercion or abuse.
Hangzhou authorities confirmed that the criminal investigation continues and disciplinary bodies will thoroughly examine related conduct, emphasizing strict adherence to laws and regulations without leniency for offenders.
