Russia Launches Major Attack on Kyiv, At Least 5 Dead and Over 23 Injured

Russia launched a major air attack on Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, killing at least 5 people and injuring over 23, while officials are rushing to search for those who might be trapped under collapsed buildings.

Ukraine's State Emergency Service (DSNS) revealed that the large-scale attack occurred around midnight Thursday, with Russian missiles targeting residential buildings and several warehouses in Kyiv and surrounding areas.

Rescue teams are intensively searching for and aiding victims who may be trapped beneath damaged structures, having already pulled at least one survivor from the rubble.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a children's hospital sustained damage from the attack, with broken windows and several cars nearby set on fire.

Additionally, missile strikes were reported at an industrial center in the Solomyansky district, southwest of Kyiv.

In the Brovary district of Kyiv region surrounding the capital, one person was killed and another injured in the attack, according to Kyiv region Governor Tymur Tkachenko.

Before the incident, authorities issued an air raid alert and urged residents to take shelter, warning of possible air defense operations in the area, while the Ukrainian Air Force issued periodic missile threat warnings.

The Russian attack also damaged the electrical system, causing power outages for thousands of homes in Kyiv and nearby areas during the night, with officials working swiftly to repair the energy grid.

Kyiv has faced almost nightly air attacks over recent weeks, with some nights resulting in dozens of deaths and serious injuries.

Meanwhile, Russia has experienced increasing missile and drone attacks from Ukraine, amid pressure for the Moscow government to return to negotiations to end the war that has lasted over four years.

This week, two attacks in Russia were reported, causing at least 16 deaths, including one child.

Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and currently controls about one-fifth of Ukrainian territory, mainly along the eastern border.
