Imran Khan, former Prime Minister of Pakistan, has been transferred from prison to a hospital for medical examination and treatment following a court order after months of health concerns.
Foreign news agencies report that Imran Khan, former Prime Minister of Pakistan currently serving a prison sentence, was moved from Adiala prison to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad shortly after midnight on Thursday, 20 Aug 2026, to receive medical examinations and treatment as ordered by the Supreme Court.
Khan's party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), stated that this transfer was in accordance with an order by a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court directing the government to admit Khan to the hospital for a thorough medical examination by specialists and his personal physician, Dr. Faisal Sultan.
Tarik Fazal Chaudhry, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, said the government is fully prepared to comply with the court's order and added that if state medical facilities are insufficient, the government may consider authorizing treatment abroad.
This latest development follows months of concern from Khan's family and personal doctors about his health and access to medical care, particularly claims from his family that Khan has lost 85% of vision in his right eye, although the government later confirmed his condition had improved with about 70% vision restored.
The PTI party and Khan's family have requested that he be allowed to remain hospitalized for further treatment, but it remains uncertain whether he will be returned to prison after completing medical examinations.
The former cricket star turned politician was removed from the prime ministership in April 2022 and has been detained since 2023 after being convicted in multiple corruption cases.
