On 20 August 2026, a 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck southern Peru at 13:00 local time. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported the epicenter was about 40 kilometers northwest of Upahuacho and approximately 800 kilometers from Lima, at a depth of 99 kilometers underground. Initially, three people suffered minor injuries.

Preliminary reports from Peruvian authorities indicate the tremors affected at least 22 houses, six schools, and 12 healthcare facilities. Officials are conducting further damage assessments and have sent emergency teams to Pucyo and Coracora in the Ayacucho region, near the earthquake’s epicenter. The tremors were felt with moderate to strong intensity in several regions, including Cusco, Arequipa, and Lima, although the shaking weakened with distance in these areas.
