
A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck near Hokkaido Prefecture in Japan on Sunday night, after a 5.9 quake had occurred in the Kanto region earlier that same day, injuring several dozen people in the early morning.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported a strong earthquake initially measured at magnitude 6.0 at approximately 22:45 on Sunday, 23 Aug 2026 local time. The epicenter was located off the coast of Urakawa City in Hokkaido Prefecture, northern Japan, at a depth of 40 kilometers.
According to the Meteorological Agency, the quake registered a seismic intensity of 4 on Japan's scale of 0 to 7 in the hardest-hit areas of Hokkaido. However, no tsunami warning was issued.
Earlier, Japan experienced a magnitude 5.9 earthquake in the central Kanto region at 02:00 on Sunday, with its epicenter south of Ibaraki Prefecture. It caused seismic intensities of 5- in Ibaraki, Saitama, Chiba, and Tokyo.
The 5.9 quake resulted in at least 37 injuries and caused minor infrastructure damage. However, there have been no reports of fatalities or significant property damage from the latest earthquakes.
